¿Cómo saber que tu perro te está llamando la atención?

We are clear about the fact that dogs and humans understand each other, some communicate better than others and in the end you realize that there is a series of behaviors that are repeated that are, basically, to get your attention.

With Uma we have fluid and very clear communication: we understand each other perfectly. I know when she wants something because she knows how to make it understood to me: by barking, crying, with her eyes, etc. and she manages to tell me what she really wants. I just have to limit myself to looking at him and asking him the right question.

It’s like when one day he surprised me with a very specific bark and then moaning. He didn’t know what was happening to him. So I followed her and she took me to one of the rooms with a dry bark. And this is what he wanted to tell me:

Uma attracts attention for several things but mainly she does so when:

• Want to play . When he wants to play he usually brings me a toy. Normally, we tend to listen to her and dedicate some of our time to playing with her, however, there are times when we can’t. What does she do to get attention? He brings all the toys one by one: first he starts with his sock, which is his favorite, if we ignore him, he goes for the ball and finally he brings hundreds of stuffed animals and dolls until he leaves the drawer practically empty. Next thing you know, you can’t walk because you’re literally surrounded by them.

• He wants to be the center of attention . It usually happens when there are guests at home or a visitor comes. Since she is not the center of attention and she knows it, what she does is go look for the toy with the loudest beep. Then, she approaches the guest and shows him her toy. If he does not pay attention to her, she begins with the hammering: she takes the toy between her teeth and does not stop biting it with the subsequent and repeated beeping, very annoying, by the way. At first, we laugh because she’s funny, but there comes a time when you want to set the doll on fire and throw it out the window. And of course, she achieves her goal: that we go after her to take away her doll.
• He wants candy . Here he knows how to communicate it like no one else. If he wants sweets, he comes closer, gets on two legs and leans on your leg, looking into your eyes insistently. So, it makes you nervous to have a dog looking at you without taking her eyes off you. When you make eye contact, he wags his tail first. You ask him, what do you want? And then, with one jump she starts heading where she wants you to follow her. You go after her and, making sure that you follow her because she keeps turning around to actually make sure, she goes to the sweets dresser, then sits down in front of it and looks first at you and then at the dresser. Like this several times. Until you ask him: do you want candy? And one bark is enough to say yes.
• Quiere salir a pasear. Cuando Uma quiere salir de paseo utiliza prácticamente la misma táctica que la de las chuches, solo que en vez de ir a la cómoda de las chuches, se dirige donde está colgada la correa y procede a mirarme a mí y luego a la correa de forma repetida hasta que le digo si sí o si no procedemos a salir.
• Quiere comer. Cuando quiere comer, la comunicación es clara: utiliza su lengua. Se acerca a mí, se pone a dos patas, se apoya en mi pierna y cuándo le pregunto qué quiere, se relame varias veces. Entonces solo tengo que preguntar: ¿comer? Y un ladrido mientras corre hacia el comedero basta para confirmarlo.
• Quiere mimos. Uma es muy intensa en este sentido. Le gustan demasiado los mimos y los exige. ¿Cómo? Se sienta a tu lado y con su pata te «araña» la mano hasta que consigue su objetivo. Algunas veces utiliza el lamido para pedir mimos, pero lo usa con gente con la que no tiene confianza, porque sabe que a nosotros no nos gusta que nos lama.

• Quiere quemar energía. Cuando hay días en que hemos estado muy ocupados y no le hemos dedicado el suficiente tiempo a jugar, acariciar o pasear empieza a deambular y dar vueltas por casa y a ladrar más de lo normal o subirse a la cama a dar vueltas como poseída por el demonio. Es una forma muy clara de comunicarnos que tiene mucha energía y que necesita quemarla, así que si alguna vez nos pasa, cuando nos lo comunica solemos cortar con lo que estamos haciendo para dedicarnos a su paseo o juegos, de intensidad alta, para que queme energía.

Estas son las principales formas que utiliza Uma para comunicarse. Pero, otros perros tienen la suya propia. Puede que muchas de estas conductas las compartan con Uma, pero hay muchas más que por ahora Uma no suele usar como son el llanto o los gemidos para pedir algo o quejarse de algún dolor, del tembleque cuando quieren manifestar que tienen miedo o se sienten inseguros, del gruñido cuando no están jugando (comen o duermen) y quieren que les dejen en paz, dar vueltas a por su cola de forma continua es claramente una señal de ansiedad, no parar de ladrar, etc.

La comunicación es fundamental para el buen entendimiento entre perro y humano. Cuanto más vínculo tengamos con el perro, mejor será la comunicación. Utilizar palabras cortas y claras ayudará a ello. Para comunicarse no hace falta frases largas, simplemente palabras concretas que el perro memorice, un perro es capaz de memorizar hasta 160 palabras (200 para perros muy inteligentes). E, incluso, ni siquiera hacen falta las palabras. Con gestos faciales y ademanes puedes comunicarte perfectamente, es lo que sucede con perros sordos: entienden a su humano por la comunicación no verbal. Y, viceversa, observa bien a tu perro y atiende a su comunicación no verbal con el movimiento de orejas, cola, etc.
